Coming into the Hockaday’s 50th year anniversary, the museum is proud to present the work of 25 living Montana artists in a completely ceramic show – Beyond Craft: The Art of Ceramics.
The last few decades have seen a trend to take craft materials beyond their funcitonal format to a place of artistic expression. Clay has been a traditional medium for functional objects and sculpture. For this exhibition, artists each submitted one wall piece and pedestal piece that represents abstraction, whimsy, and social commentary outside of the functional.
This exhibition features clay artists, most of whom are part of the Montana Clay Group, and artists representing clay and ceramic studios from around the state, including the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, the Clay Studio of Missoula, Red Lodge Clay Center, University of Montana and Montana State University arts/ceramics departments.
