Guidelines for Submissions

gallery

Proposals will be accepted anytime. The exhibition committee meets several times a year. Notifications will be mailed after the review takes place.

The Hockaday is always interested in receiving exhibition proposals from artists and curators. The proposal should be clear, concise and include the exhibition’s thesis, educational value, intended audiences, a concise artwork checklist, artist(s) CV or bios, and any other pertinent information. Please include images as well. Proposals should be sent as a .pdf attachment (7 MB limit) and emailed to the Executive Director (director@hockadaymuseum.com).

PLEASE NOTE: The Museum is booking about 2 years out for exhibitions.
Eligibility

A proposal may be submitted by:

  • An artist
  • Group of artists, i.e. association or guild
  • A curator (if a curator is approved they are entirely responsible for the content of the exhibition, see below)
  • Emerging artists -a student with a sponsoring school or teacher (ages 13-18 must have parents written permission)
Committee Criteria for Selecting Exhibitions

The quality of each artist’s work will be evaluated in regard to:

  • Overall balance and consistency of the work shown
  • Clarity of the stated intention and focus of the proposed exhibition
  • Cohesiveness of the stated intention and how that translates into the actual work
  • Compatibility of the exhibition within the annual exhibition schedule
What’s Required

Completed proposals must include all of the following:

  • Proposal-complete description of proposed exhibition concept (150-200 words)
  • Dates exhibit is available and any restrictions concerning scheduling (travel, work, school etc.)
  • Contact info including address, phone and email
  • CV and or resume, and bio
  • Artist/process statement
  • Images: 10–20 high-resolution digital images, provide a reference sheet for all images that describes title, use of media and size
  • SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope) for notification and return of materials. A list of items in the packet to indicate those materials you prefer returned and those that can be discarded.
  • Articles on the artist and previous exhibits
  • Please state the educational elements of the exhibit, and/or whether the artist is available for workshops, classes, or lectures
  • Professional letters of reference

All written materials should be typed, not handwritten. Proof read your documents for errors, grammar and spelling. Use a simple binder or packet to organize all materials neatly. Clearly mark or label all materials with your name and contact info in case they get separated from the packet. Address labels are appropriate.

The Exhibition Committee will not accept a proposal for a body of work that has already been shown in Kalispell or the Flathead Valley. Proposals must be for new work or work new to this area. All successful applicants must enter into an exhibition contract with the Hockaday Museum of Art. The Hockaday Museum of Art must approve any deviation from the original exhibition proposal. In the case of major changes to the original exhibition proposal the Hockaday Museum of Art reserves the right to terminate the agreement. The name Hockaday Museum of Art will not be used in any grant or sponsorship application without the written approval of the Executive Director. If the exhibition requires significant materials, equipment, travel or freight costs it is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure these costs can be met. All work exhibited should be for sale. Transacted sales will be paid to the artist at 60% of the sales price. Artwork is covered by insurance while on the premises. Submitting an application does not guarantee inclusion in the annual program and no correspondence will be entered into with regard to unsuccessful applications.
