In August 2015, Mary Edna Fraser was Glacier National Park’s Artist in Residence, staying at the historic Sperry Chalet to inspire her work. The residency resulted in 14 plein air oil paintings, photography, books, and numerous batiks on silk.
Fraser is a master batik artist who teaches worldwide and makes art via digital aerial photography, oil painting, monotypes, and watercolors. She has visited over 30 National Parks in her 66 years and her methods employ painting on location as inspiration for large-scale works.
Gateway to Glacier showcases this variety of work alongside a scholarly component of accompanying text by geoscientist Orrin H. Pilkey. Both Mary Edna’s artwork and Orrin’s words have been featured by National Geographic, National Academy of Sciences, and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. ‘Gateway to Glacier’ reveals the austerity of geology through monumental landscapes depicted of hiking to the retreating Sperry Glacier and Continental Divide.
Opening reception takes place Thursday, October 3rd, 2019 from 5-7pm. $10 admission to the public, free for museum members. The exhibit will be on view from October 4, 2019 through January 4, 2020.
