Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) defines the art quilt as a ‘creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure’. Broad Spectrum proudly presents the SAQA Montana/Idaho region with contemporary quilted artworks by 21 artists, chosen by juror Sarah Justice, Executive Director, Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art, Great Falls, MT. The exhibition debuted in 2020 at Northcutt Steele Gallery at Montana State University Billings and is touring to five venues in Montana in 2022-23 through the auspices of the Montana Art Gallery Directors Association (MAGDA) and is accompanied by a full-color catalog.
According to then Northcutt Steele Gallery Director, Dr. Leanne Gilbertson, “the art quilt as form, technique, and idea promises solace in a moment of segnetation and necessary isolation. The range of content and skill expressed in the exhibition is inspiring, offering a bounty of colors, textures, and concepts. Like the best meal and best dinner party, each artwork exists as an entity unto itself made richer by the company it keeps. I hope this collection enlivens your senses and provides some sustaining comfort in these challenging times.”
