Docents at the Hockaday Museum of Art are volunteers who conduct educational tours for schools, Thursday and Saturday public tours, and outreach presentations. While guiding visitors through the Museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions they enrich the viewer’s experience by engaging interest, deepening understanding of art, and bringing artworks to life.

What is required of a Docent?
No artistic background is needed!– adults with a love of art and willingness to give a commitment of time are invited to join the program. Docents must have the time to commit to:

Docent training sessions
Attend meetings – 10:00 am on the first Monday of each month
Conduct research
Attend gallery talks, artist demonstrations, and lectures
Conduct tours through the galleries

Docent Training
Initial training includes an orientation session, training sessions, tour observation, conducting research, and spending time in the galleries. Participants will explore a variety of ways to lead visitors through the Museum's exhibitions and obtain knowledge about various aspects of art, art theory, and art history.
